When our son John was diagnosed with autism in 1988, we were overwhelmed, devastated, and alone. We called the Autism Society for information and support and immediately connected with other families in our area who were living with what was then a poorly understood disorder. When we moved to Austin in 1995, we joined the Autism Society affiliate right away because we knew how crucial it was to have a support network. Now that John is 28, we know a lot about autism but we still depend on the Autism Society for the most current information about local resources and best practices. Our Autism Society friends have been and will continue to be with us every step of the way.
